I've recently bought the book Pictorial Composition by Henri Rankin Poore. In just the first few pages I felt that I learnt a lot. I was also impressed by the book's method of instruction by example for illustrating working composition techniques. The list of artworks chosen is impressive. The only issue with my copy is that most of the pages are in black and white, and I found myself googling each artwork to look at a better print of the painting or sketch or sculpture. And the thing with artworks is that you need to look at them more than once to learn from them. I might even decide to make a sketch of the master copy to do some hands-on learning.

Pretty soon I came to the conclusion that my time would be better spent digitizing the list of artworks once and then refer to them each via a link anytime I wanted to look at them again. This took almost an hour of work across three sessions on three days, but it was worth it.

Without further ado here's the table of artworks. (Of course this still requires a couple of clicks to get to the final print. I might improve this further at some point so that I can fetch the best image directly. Maybe in another update.)
